After giving the artists some time to get to know each other through meetings and workshops, it felt more natural to trust the organic process that develops through relationships, rather than providing a specific framework for the co-creation residencies. The artists were invited to pair up with each other according to their desires, availability, and affinities, simply by sharing what each of the partner organizations had to offer in the context of the residencies.
Much more than just offering specialized spaces and equipment, the seven organizations are above all places for meeting and sharing around their respective missions and specialties, where there is great potential for networking through the practice of art.
Alain-Martin Richard embarked on a process that invited collaboration from all the other artists involved in the project to create his interactive installation La parole entravée (The Shackled Word). This project received support from Avatar, an artist-run centre for audio and electronic art, which provided access to studios and equipment as well as artistic and technical support. In addition to generously lending equipment and providing technical support for the various activities and meetings that took place throughout Yahndawa’.
Nicolas Renaud, Manon Sioui, Anne-Marie Bouchard and France Gros-Louis Morin spent two weeks in a studio at La Bande Vidéo, which contributed to their projects with editing and filming equipment as well as technical assistance.
Anne-Marie Proulx and Guy Sioui Duran were able to record their literary conversations with Rhizome, which provided them with artistic and technical support, access to the “polimicrostudio,” recording, filming, and shooting equipment, and the editing station.
Andrée Levesque Sioui, Érika Hagen-Veilleux, Jeffrey Poirier and Phile Després have turned the Chambre blanche gallery into a space for meeting and creation, with access to laboratories, workshops, and technical assistance.
Annie Baillargeon, Teharihulen Michel Savard and France Gros-Louis Morin explored their performance practice during a two-week residency at the Lieu gallery, which served as their research and creative space. The Lieu also provided technical assistance for the production of the Onyiondih event in Wendake in the fall of 2022.
For the creation of his sculptures, Alexis Gros-Louis worked in the production workshops of L’Œil de Poisson, which also provided access to its gallery space for the in situ realization of the project Nos Coeurs Ratchets by Aïcha Bastien N’diaye and Dgino Cantin.
Manon Sioui, Anne-Marie Bouchard and France Gros-Louis Morin came together around the idea of creating using natural materials and explored different techniques with VU, which offered its digital printing services, image processing tools, artistic support, technical assistance, and access to its documentation center and darkroom.
Le Campement, A collective workshop located at Méduse and accessible at all times was provided by VU for the duration of the residencies to serve as a gathering place for discussion, work, and workshops. In addition, a web-based communication platform (Slack) was also used as a place for sharing and communication.
Portages
The artists were also invited to each propose what we called a “portage,” that is, an opportunity to share experiences and skills. For example, Manon generously offered workshops on beadwork, moose hair embroidery, and wampum making, while Anne-Marie B. offered a workshop on making “organic film” from agar-agar. Finally, Annie, Teharihulen, Alain-Martin, and Alexis proposed a joint performance on the riverbank during the summer. Several other exchanges also took place in a more informal setting, at the Camp or during other residencies.
